Pregnancy Guide·Second Trimester

Week 14: Facial Expressions

Lemon (~85mm)·Last reviewed: 25 April 2026
Quick answer

At week 14, your baby can squint, frown, and grimace. Fine hair called lanugo covers the body for warmth. According to Nuhah's pregnancy guide, your baby is now about the size of a lemon and the liver is starting to produce bile.

Baby development at week 14

The baby can squint, frown, and grimace - early facial expressions driven by developing facial muscles. Lanugo (fine, downy hair) is beginning to develop and will cover the body over the coming weeks, helping to anchor the vernix caseosa that protects the skin. The liver starts making bile, and the spleen begins producing red blood cells. The baby's thyroid gland is now producing hormones. Arms are now in proportion with the body.

Your body this week

Your bump is likely becoming noticeable. You may feel more energetic and positive. Appetite often returns as nausea subsides. Some people notice pregnancy rhinitis (a stuffy nose) caused by increased blood flow to mucous membranes. Your blood volume continues to increase, and you may notice occasional dizziness if you stand up too quickly.

Frequently asked questions

How big is my baby at 14 weeks?

About 85mm (8.5cm), roughly the size of a lemon. Your baby can now make facial expressions, is covered in fine hair called lanugo, and the liver is beginning to produce bile. Growth is rapid from here.

Is it safe to exercise during pregnancy?

Yes, for most people. Walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, and light strength training are all generally safe. Avoid contact sports, activities with a falling risk, and anything that involves lying flat on your back after week 16. Always check with your midwife if you have any concerns.
