Understanding UK maternity leave

In the UK, eligible employees can take up to 52 weeks of maternity leave. The first 26 weeks are Ordinary Maternity Leave, and the next 26 are Additional Maternity Leave.

Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is paid for up to 39 weeks: 6 weeks at 90% of your average weekly earnings, then 33 weeks at the lower of the statutory rate or 90% of earnings. The remaining 13 weeks are unpaid.

You must tell your employer at least 15 weeks before your due date. Your employer may offer enhanced maternity pay above the statutory minimum - check your contract.

This calculator provides estimates based on UK statutory entitlements for the 2025/26 tax year. Your actual entitlement may differ based on your employment status, length of service, and employer policies. Contact ACAS or GOV.UK for definitive guidance.
