Eligible employees can take 1 or 2 weeks of Statutory Paternity Leave around the birth or adoption of a child. From 6 April 2026 you can take the two weeks as two separate one-week blocks, and the leave can begin any time within 52 weeks of the birth.
Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP) is the lower of 90% of your average weekly earnings or £194.32/week in 2026-27. SPP requires 26 weeks of continuous service with your employer by the end of the 15th week before the due date, and average earnings of at least £129/week.
You must tell your employer by the end of the 15th week before the due date that you intend to take paternity leave. Give 28 days' notice before each block of leave starts. Your employer may offer enhanced paternity pay above the statutory minimum.
