Pregnancy Guide·Second Trimester

Week 13: Vocal Cords Form

Peapod (~72mm)·Last reviewed: 25 April 2026
Quick answer

Welcome to the second trimester. At week 13, your baby is the size of a peapod with vocal cords developing and unique fingerprints forming. According to Nuhah's pregnancy guide, many people notice improved energy and reduced nausea from this week.

Baby development at week 13

Vocal cords are developing. The intestines have already moved into the abdomen (around week 11). Fingerprints are forming - unique patterns that will identify this person for life. The baby can make facial expressions, open and close their mouth, and move their limbs more deliberately. The placenta is now fully functional, providing oxygen and nutrients.

Your body this week

Welcome to the second trimester, often called the golden trimester. Energy levels typically improve, nausea fades, and many people feel their best during the coming weeks. Your bump may start becoming visible. You might notice a dark line forming down the centre of your abdomen (linea nigra), which is completely normal and caused by hormonal changes.

Things to do this week

Frequently asked questions

What is the second trimester?

The second trimester covers weeks 13-27. It is often called the golden trimester because many people feel their best - nausea eases, energy returns, and the bump is visible but not yet uncomfortable. This is typically when you feel baby movements for the first time.

When do I feel the baby move?

First-time parents usually feel movement between weeks 18-22. People who have been pregnant before may notice it earlier, from around week 16. Early movements feel like flutters, bubbles, or gentle tapping. Nuhah's kick counter tool is recommended from week 28 onwards.
