Pregnancy Guide·Third Trimester

Week 32: Practice Breathing

Squash (~28cm crown-rump)·Last reviewed: 25 April 2026
Quick answer

At week 32, your baby is practising breathing movements about 30% of the time. Toenails are visible and bones are fully developed but still soft. According to Nuhah's pregnancy guide, your baby is putting on about 250g per week.

Baby development at week 32

Lungs practise breathing movements. Toenails are visible. The baby is putting on about 200g per week, mainly fat under the skin. Bones are fully developed but still soft and flexible (important for birth). The baby can open and close their eyes, track light, and has established a clear sleep/wake pattern. All five senses are now functional.

Your body this week

You may feel short of breath as the uterus presses on your diaphragm. Frequent urination increases again as the baby moves lower in the pelvis. Swollen ankles, heartburn, and difficulty sleeping are common. Some people experience leaking colostrum (early milk) from their breasts. The nesting instinct may be strong.

Things to do this week

1
Make sure your hospital bag is nearly ready
2
Install the car seat - you will need it to bring baby home
3
Discuss your birth plan with your midwife at your next appointment
4
If you have other children, start preparing them for the new baby
5
Consider a breastfeeding workshop if you plan to breastfeed

Frequently asked questions

When should my hospital bag be packed?

Aim to have your hospital bag packed by week 36, but starting at week 32 gives you plenty of time. Nuhah's hospital bag checklist covers everything you need for yourself, your partner, and your baby.

Is leaking from breasts normal during pregnancy?

Yes. Colostrum (early milk) can leak from the breasts from the second trimester onwards, though it is more common in the third. It is completely normal and a sign your body is preparing for feeding.
