Pregnancy Guide·Third Trimester

Week 30: Temperature Regulation

Cabbage (~27cm crown-rump)·Last reviewed: 25 April 2026
Quick answer

At week 30, your baby can regulate their own body temperature. Red blood cell production has shifted to the bone marrow, and lanugo is starting to disappear. According to Nuhah's pregnancy guide, your baby weighs about 1.3kg now.

Baby development at week 30

Red blood cell production shifts from the liver to the bone marrow. The baby can regulate their own body temperature. Lanugo (fine body hair) will begin to disappear around week 32. The baby weighs about 1.3kg and is roughly 40cm from head to toe. They are putting on about 200g per week from now. Brain development continues at an extraordinary pace, and the baby responds to stimulation from light, sound, and touch.

Your body this week

You may feel increasingly heavy and tired. Sleeping can be difficult due to your bump size, frequent urination, and general discomfort. Heartburn may worsen. Some people develop pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PGP) which causes pain in the pubic area and hips. Braxton Hicks continue, and you should be familiar with the difference between these and real contractions.

Things to do this week

1
Continue monitoring baby movements daily
2
If you experience pelvic pain, speak to your midwife about a physiotherapy referral
3
Finalise your birth preferences and discuss them with your partner and midwife
4
Start preparing your home for the baby - washing clothes, setting up the cot

Frequently asked questions

How much weight does the baby gain in the third trimester?

Babies gain the most weight between weeks 28 and 40, typically putting on about 200-250g per week. They roughly triple their weight in the third trimester, going from about 1kg to an average of 3.3-3.5kg at birth.

What is pelvic girdle pain?

Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) affects about 1 in 5 pregnant people. It causes pain at the front and back of the pelvis, which can make walking, climbing stairs, and turning in bed painful. A physiotherapist can help with exercises and support belts.
