Which UK prenatal vitamins are halal certified?

Here is the finding that shaped this guide: almost no prenatal vitamin sold in the UK carries a current, verifiable halal certificate from an independent body. Plenty say halal. Very few can show you who certified it and when.

That is not a scandal. It is a market gap, and it means the useful question is not "which prenatal is halal" but "how much evidence do you personally need, and which product clears that bar". This guide sorts the UK market by evidence, not by marketing.

Three levels of evidence

Almost every conversation about halal supplements goes wrong because these three get treated as the same thing.

Certified. An independent body has inspected the supply chain and issued a certificate you can look up. In the UK that usually means the Halal Monitoring Committee or the Halal Food Authority. For American brands, IFANCA or ISNA.

Declared. The manufacturer states on the label that the product is halal or uses halal-sourced ingredients. This carries legal weight, because false labelling is an offence, but nobody independent has checked the chain.

Suitable. No animal-derived ingredient is present at all, so the question does not arise. A vegetable-capsule or plain tablet product with no gelatin is suitable regardless of what any certifier says.

Which level you need is your call, and it is a religious question rather than a factual one. What this guide can do is tell you honestly which level each product actually sits at.

The UK market, sorted by evidence

Hashmats HabibaaCare, the only certified UK option

Twenty-three nutrients, 400mcg folic acid, 10mcg vitamin D3, tablet form with no gelatin, made in the UK, Vegetarian Society approved, sold through pharmacies and Amazon UK.

It is the only UK prenatal we could find with an actual certificate to look up: HMC number 2024-479, product code CTB4918, manufactured by Parkacre Enterprises and submitted by Hashmats Health of Southall.

The certificate was issued 28 September 2024 and expired 27 September 2025. The one before it ran September 2023 to September 2024, so renewal is annual. We could not find a current certificate published on the HMC site on 30 July 2026, while retailers continue to describe the product as HMC certified. The most likely explanation is an unpublished renewal, but we are not going to assert that. Look for the HMC device on the pack, and if it matters to you, ask Hashmats for the current certificate number.

Pregnacare, the widely available option

Pregnacare Original, Liquid and Conception contain no gelatin at all, so they are suitable regardless of certification. Plus, Max, Breastfeeding and Conception Max each contain one Omega-3 capsule whose shell is declared as halal bovine gelatin on the label. Vitabiotics states no ingredient in the range is unsuitable for a halal diet, but names no certifier and does not appear in HMC's records.

The two ingredients nobody warns you about

Vitamin D3. Most D3 in supplements is derived from lanolin, the grease in sheep's wool. Because it comes from a living animal rather than a slaughtered one, many hold that it does not raise a slaughter question at all. Others treat animal-derived D3 as doubtful and prefer to avoid it. There is genuine scholarly difference here and we are not going to settle it. If you want to sidestep it, D3 from lichen is plant-derived and appears on vegan-labelled products.

Gummies. Gummy prenatals are increasingly popular and are often the only thing someone with severe sickness can keep down. Most gummies are set with gelatin, frequently porcine. Pectin-set gummies avoid this. If you need a gummy, read the gelling agent specifically, and treat "vegetarian" on the front as a prompt to check the back rather than an answer.

Choosing for your situation

Trying to conceive. Pregnacare Conception is gelatin-free, or Hashmats HabibaaCare covers conception through breastfeeding in one product. Start folic acid now rather than waiting for a positive test.

Severe sickness or trouble swallowing. Pregnacare Liquid is gelatin-free and avoids tablets entirely. A pectin gummy is the alternative. Getting something in beats getting the perfect thing in.

Vegetarian or vegan. Choose a gelatin-free tablet and check the D3 source separately. Vegan-labelled products resolve both questions at once.

Breastfeeding. Pregnacare Breastfeeding uses the same halal bovine gelatin declaration as the rest of the range. Vitamin D at 10mcg daily is recommended throughout breastfeeding, not just pregnancy.

Higher-risk pregnancies. If you have diabetes, a BMI of 30 or over, are taking certain epilepsy medications, or have a family history of neural tube defects, you may need 5mg folic acid rather than 400mcg. That is prescription-only and a decision for your GP or midwife. No over-the-counter prenatal covers it.

The baseline that actually matters

The NHS position is 400mcg folic acid daily from before conception until 12 weeks, and 10mcg vitamin D daily throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Any prenatal that hits those two numbers is doing the essential work. The rest is useful rather than necessary.

Do not let the search for a perfect certificate delay you starting folic acid. The folic acid window closes at twelve weeks and it does not reopen. If the only thing available to you today is a plain 400mcg folic acid tablet, which is gelatin-free and costs a couple of pounds, take that today and sort the multivitamin out this week.

Checking any brand yourself

1. Read the capsule shell line. Vegetable capsule or HPMC means no animal question. Gelatin with no source named is the one to query.
2. If it says gelatin, look for the source. Bovine narrows it, bovine plus a named certifier settles it, bovine alone is a declaration.
3. Look for a certifier's mark rather than the word halal. HMC or HFA in the UK, IFANCA or ISNA for US brands.
4. Email the company. Ask who certifies your gelatin, and what is the current certificate number and expiry date. A brand that cannot answer both has told you something.
