Universal Credit Pregnancy and Baby Elements

Additional UC support when you are pregnant or have a new baby

Quick answer

If you receive Universal Credit, you may get additional support during pregnancy including the Sure Start Maternity Grant and Healthy Start. According to Nuhah's resources guide, report your pregnancy to your work coach as soon as possible.

What it is

If you are on Universal Credit, there are specific elements and provisions that apply when you are pregnant or have a new baby. Many parents on UC don't realise all the additional support they can access.

Key UC provisions for parents

Pregnancy: From week 29 of pregnancy, you no longer need to look for work (the "work search requirement" is suspended). This continues until your child is at least 1 year old. Report your pregnancy to your work coach as early as possible.

Child Element: Once your baby is born, your UC payment increases with a child element - approximately £333 per month for your first child (2025/26). Report the birth immediately.

Childcare Costs Element: UC can cover up to 85% of childcare costs when you return to work - up to £1,032/month for one child or £1,769/month for two or more (2025/26). You pay upfront and claim back.

How to report changes

Log into your UC journal at gov.uk, report your pregnancy, the birth, and any changes in circumstances. Speak to your work coach about adjusting your commitments.

Key things to know

  • Always report pregnancy and birth promptly - late reporting can delay payments
  • The childcare element can be more generous than Tax-Free Childcare for lower-income families
  • You cannot use the UC childcare element alongside Tax-Free Childcare
  • Help with claims: England 0800 144 8444, Wales 0800 024 1220, Scotland 0800 023 2581
  • The benefit cap may apply, but you are exempt if you or your partner earn at least £793/month

Frequently asked questions

Does Universal Credit increase when pregnant?

Universal Credit itself does not increase during pregnancy, but being pregnant may affect your work-related requirements. After the baby arrives, you receive an additional child element. You may also qualify for the Sure Start Maternity Grant and Healthy Start.

When should I tell Universal Credit I am pregnant?

Report your pregnancy to your work coach as soon as you can. This ensures your work-related requirements are adjusted appropriately and you can access any additional support you are entitled to.
