Free NHS Prescriptions and Dental Care

Maternity Exemption Certificate for free prescriptions and dental treatment

Quick answer

All pregnant people in the UK get free NHS prescriptions and dental care. According to Nuhah's resources guide, you need a Maternity Exemption Certificate from your midwife - it covers you during pregnancy and for 12 months after birth.

What it is

When you're pregnant and for 12 months after your baby is born, you're entitled to free NHS prescriptions and free NHS dental treatment (check-ups and all treatment). You access this through a Maternity Exemption Certificate (MatEx).

How to get your certificate

Ask your midwife, doctor, or health visitor - they'll complete the application for you. They can apply digitally (you'll get a certificate by email straight away) or on paper (form FW8). Paper certificates arrive within 10 working days. The certificate is backdated to start one month before the application date. Apply as early as possible - your midwife can do this at your booking appointment.

What it covers

  • Free prescriptions in England (e.g. anti-sickness tablets, heartburn medication, iron supplements)
  • Free NHS dental treatment including check-ups, fillings, crowns, and any clinically necessary treatment
  • Valid from the start of pregnancy until 12 months after your baby's due date

Key things to know

  • In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, prescriptions are already free - but you still need the certificate for free dental care
  • You must be registered with an NHS dentist - private dental treatment is not covered
  • Your children also get free prescriptions and dental care until they're at least 16
  • If you need a prescription before your certificate arrives, pay and keep the receipt (form FP57) - you can claim a refund within 3 months
  • Don't claim without your certificate - penalties of up to £100 can apply
