Pregnancy Guide·First Trimester

Week 9: Embryo to Foetus

Cherry (~23mm)·Last reviewed: 25 April 2026
Quick answer

At week 9, your baby officially becomes a foetus. All essential organs have begun forming and the tail has disappeared. According to Nuhah's pregnancy guide, your baby is now about the size of a cherry and muscles are starting to develop.

Baby development at week 9

Your baby is officially a foetus now. All essential organs have begun forming, and the tail has disappeared. Muscles start developing, and the baby may hiccup (diaphragm contractions that help the lungs develop). The face is becoming more recognisable with a nose tip and upper lip forming. External genitalia are starting to develop, though it is far too early to determine sex on a scan.

Your body this week

Fatigue and nausea continue for most people. Your waist may be thickening slightly, though a visible bump is unlikely for a first pregnancy. Mood swings can be intense as hormones fluctuate. You might notice veins becoming more visible on your breasts and abdomen as blood volume increases. Some people experience vivid dreams during pregnancy.

Things to do this week

1
If you haven't had your booking appointment yet, make sure it is scheduled
2
Continue taking folic acid and vitamin D
3
Eat small, frequent meals if nausea is bothering you
4
Gentle walks and fresh air can help with nausea and mood

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an embryo and a foetus?

The term embryo is used from conception until week 8. From week 9 onwards, the developing baby is called a foetus. This change reflects that all major organs and structures have begun forming, and the focus shifts to growth and maturation.

Is it normal to feel anxious in early pregnancy?

Completely. Anxiety is very common in early pregnancy, especially before scans. Hormonal changes, uncertainty, and the significance of what is happening can all contribute. Talk to your partner, a friend, or your midwife if anxiety feels overwhelming. Nuhah's resources section lists perinatal mental health support.
