Pregnancy Guide·Third Trimester

Week 42: Post-Term

Large watermelon·Last reviewed: 25 April 2026
Quick answer

Week 42 is considered post-term. Per NICE NG207 (2021), induction is offered at 41 weeks because the risk of stillbirth increases with advancing gestation. If you have reached 42 weeks, your medical team will be closely monitoring you and discussing options with you now.

Baby development at week 42

The baby is fully mature and continues to grow. At this stage, the risk of complications increases with each additional day, which is why NICE 2021 guidance recommends offering induction at 41 weeks. The baby may have dry, peeling skin from reduced vernix protection. They are ready for birth and will thrive once delivered.

Your body this week

You will be having regular monitoring (typically every 2-3 days) with your maternity team. Per NICE NG207 (2021), induction is offered at 41 weeks based on the increased risk of stillbirth with advancing gestation, so by 42 weeks you may already have an induction underway or scheduled, or be under enhanced monitoring if you have declined. It is completely natural to feel frustrated, anxious, or impatient. Your medical team's priority is your safety and your baby's wellbeing. Labour can still start naturally right up until induction.

Things to do this week

1
Attend all monitoring appointments
2
Discuss induction plans with your medical team
3
Continue monitoring baby movements closely
4
Stay calm and trust your care team - your baby will be here very soon

Frequently asked questions

Why is induction recommended at 42 weeks?

Induction is recommended because the risk of stillbirth increases with advancing gestation. NICE 2021 NG207 guidance recommends offering induction at 41 weeks. The medical evidence supports timely induction to reduce perinatal risk. Your midwife will discuss timing and options with you.

Can I refuse induction?

You have the right to make informed decisions about your care. If you choose to decline induction, your maternity team will arrange increased monitoring (typically daily). They will discuss the benefits and risks so you can make the best decision for your situation.
