Pregnancy Guide·First Trimester

Week 2: Preparing to Ovulate

Not yet conceived·Last reviewed: 25 April 2026
Quick answer

During week 2 of pregnancy, your body is preparing to release an egg. Nuhah's pregnancy guide counts this as part of your pregnancy even though conception hasn't happened yet - it typically occurs at the end of this week or early next week.

Baby development at week 2

Your baby has not been conceived yet. Inside your ovaries, one follicle is becoming dominant and growing rapidly, preparing to release a mature egg. The uterine lining is thickening with blood and nutrients, creating the perfect environment for a fertilised egg to implant.

Your body this week

Oestrogen levels are rising, which thickens the uterine lining and triggers a surge of luteinising hormone (LH). You may notice changes in cervical mucus - it becomes clearer, more slippery, and stretchy as ovulation approaches. Some people feel a twinge of pain on one side (mittelschmerz) when the egg is released.

Things to do this week

1
Continue taking folic acid daily
2
This is your most fertile time if you are trying to conceive
3
Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to conceive?

The most fertile days are the 2-3 days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Having sex every 2-3 days throughout the month gives you the best chance without needing to time things precisely.

How do I know when I'm ovulating?

Signs include clear stretchy cervical mucus, a slight rise in basal body temperature, mild pelvic discomfort, and increased libido. Ovulation prediction kits detect the LH surge 24-36 hours before ovulation.
