Week 19: Senses Developing

Mango (~15cm)·Last reviewed: 25 April 2026
Quick answer

At week 19, your baby's senses are developing rapidly. The brain is designating areas for smell, taste, hearing, sight, and touch. According to Nuhah's pregnancy guide, the anomaly scan is just around the corner.

Baby development at week 19

The brain is designating specialised areas for the five senses. A waxy coating (vernix) continues to protect the skin. The baby is swallowing amniotic fluid and the kidneys are producing urine. Hair may be growing on the head. The baby is about 15cm from crown to rump and weighs around 240g.

Your body this week

You may experience round ligament pain, especially when changing position quickly. Skin changes continue, and you may notice your navel starting to pop out as your abdomen stretches. Appetite is usually good. Some people find it hard to concentrate (pregnancy brain).

Things to do this week

1
Your 20-week scan is next week - prepare any questions you have
