Week 11: Tooth Buds

Fig (~45mm)·Last reviewed: 25 April 2026
Quick answer

At week 11, your baby is about the size of a fig. Tooth buds are appearing under the gums, fingers and toes are fully separated, and external genitalia are starting to differentiate. Your dating scan is coming up soon.

Baby development at week 11

Tooth buds appear under the gums. Fingers and toes are now fully separated - no more webbing. External genitalia are starting to differentiate, though it is still too early to tell sex on an ultrasound. The baby's head makes up about half of their total length at this stage. The nasal passages are open, and the tongue and palate are forming. Hair follicles are beginning to develop.

Your body this week

Some people start to feel slightly less nauseated this week, though it varies hugely. Your uterus is rising out of the pelvis, which may reduce the constant need to urinate. Energy levels may start to improve slightly. You might notice changes in your hair and nails - many people find their hair becomes thicker during pregnancy due to reduced shedding.

Things to do this week

1
Your dating scan is due between weeks 11-14 - make sure it is booked
2
Prepare questions for your sonographer
3
Continue taking folic acid and vitamin D supplements
4
Consider signing up for antenatal classes (NCT, NHS, or other providers)

Frequently asked questions

What does the 12-week dating scan check?

The dating scan confirms your due date by measuring the baby, checks for a heartbeat, identifies whether you are carrying one baby or multiples, and screens for certain conditions (if you opt in). It is also when many parents see their baby for the first time on screen.

Do I need to prepare for the dating scan?

You may be asked to drink water before the scan so your bladder is full, which helps create a clearer image. Wear comfortable clothing with easy access to your abdomen. The scan takes about 20-30 minutes and is painless.
